Understanding Silicone Grades

Silicone dishware comes in two primary food-safe grades: FDA-grade and LFGB-grade. Both meet safety standards for human use.

  • FDA (Food and Drug Administration): FDA-grade silicone meets U.S. government testing standards to ensure food safety.
  • LFGB (Lebensmittel- und Futtermittelgesetzbuch): A European food safety standard, more stringent than FDA regulations. LFGB-grade silicone is used in select products that require extra durability.

At Moonkie, we offer both FDA and LFGB-grade silicone to ensure the highest quality and performance. LFGB-grade silicone is reserved for items that require added toughness, such as those that go in the mouth. Why We Choose LFGB-Grade Silicone for Select Products

There are two main reasons we select LFGB-grade silicone for certain items:

  • Cost Considerations: LFGB-grade silicone is more expensive than FDA-grade, so to keep our products affordable, we use FDA-grade silicone in most items that don’t require extra durability.
  • Both Grades Are Safe: While LFGB-grade silicone offers superior durability, both FDA and LFGB grades are safe for human use. We choose LFGB-grade silicone for items such as teethers, pacifiers, and pouches for baby food feeders—products that need added strength to withstand wear and tear.
